The Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University is one of the largest and most multi-disciplinary environments in North America. With over 4,000 students, the Faculty engages design thinking, live performance, community fieldwork, aesthetic activism, technical experimentation, historical scholarship, as well as traditional and digital fabrication at the undergraduate and graduate level. PhD programs through the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture, as well as MA and PhD tracks in the Individualized Program, have offered two of the most experimental advanced research degrees for over a decade.

The Department of Design and Computation Arts is seeking qualified applicants to fill two tenure-track positions:

Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Material Futures: Textiles Surface Structure Fibres
We are seeking a designer, artist, engineer or scientist with recognized research and/or research-creation strengths in cross-disciplinary collaborative investigations into experimental textiles, fibre structures, bio or bio-inspired cloth, soft surface or responsive wearables, that specifically explore the interface between the body and the environment.

Candidates eligible for Tier 2 chair positions must be exceptional emerging scholars within ten years of their highest degree at the time of nomination. Applicants who are more than ten years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. Cluster hire in Materials and Materiality: Designing for Socio-environmentally Responsive Cities
As part of Concordia’s cluster hiring initiative in the area of “Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Communities and Cities,” we are looking for exceptional scholars who will work with each other and with colleagues across the University to meet the economic, social and environmental demands of present and future generations. Successful candidates for this cluster hire will be a collaborative individual whose research and creative activities are at the leading edge in this rapidly changing field.

We are seeking a designer, landscape architect, textile expert or practitioner from a related field, who has a recognized profile in cross-disciplinary collaborative research and/or research-creation in speculative design related to material sciences and oriented toward scalable realisations for resilient and sustainable cities (body skins to building skins: objects to architectures). The candidate must have a practice-based dossier as well as demonstrated familiarity with critical perspectives on material culture and its discourses from a socio-cultural perspective.

The cross-disciplinary, collaborative nature of this position favours a research-creation practice oriented toward community engagement and a “living lab” ecology. Central to this position is an interrogation of the socio-economic drivers that underlie the lifecycle of designing objects, structures, and systems for sustainable and resilient cities. Innovation in this field requires the expertise of designers working alongside professionals in humanities, engineering, the sciences, and social sciences in order to investigate a diversity of interlinked issues: the philosophy of resiliency, the politics of production, the ethics of material sourcing, or the life cycle/relationships between multi-species inhabitants and habitats.
