Beeler Gallery at Columbus College of Art & Design presents How well do you behave? IN THE FLAT FIELD., on view February 1 through March 25, 2018.

The season marks new Director of Exhibitions Jo-ey Tang’s first season at Beeler Gallery.

How can aesthetic, political, and intellectual urgency be conveyed and designed in the present moment? We look back at materials not as artifacts but as first encounters. How well do we behave towards materials? How well do materials behave back? What resonances and resistance are there for the here and now? What responsibilities does a gallery situated in an art and design school have in the present moment?

Micro-histories and graphic identity of art and design school galleries. Including Portikus, Städelschule (Frankfurt), Villa Arson (Nice), ÉCAL (Lausanne), Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills), and California Institute of the Arts (Valencia).

Archive of Black & Red Books and Detroit Printing Co-Op, with the first unauthorized English edition of Guy Debord’s 1967 book The Society of the Spectacle. Curated by Danielle Aubert (with Maia Asshaq).

1970 issue of art tabloid Culture Hero founded by Les Levine, dedicated to The Village Voice dance critic Jill Johnston, featuring writings by Meredith Monk and Yvonne Rainer.

New York and Los Angeles-based fashion designers Eckhaus Latta’s runway invitations from 2013 to 2018, designed by Eric Wrenn, design director for Artforum.

Philosopher Alain Badiou’s lecture notes on love are installed in Schema Corridor, informing the moving image programming, including works by Sable Elyse Smith, Vier5, Ephraim Asili, and Les Levine.

Columbus’ first art book fair, with the participation of the Detroit Art Book Fair, Copenhagen’s One Thousand Books fair, Mexico City’s Index Art Book Fair, and independent publishers.

Nancy Brooks Brody, Joy Episalla, and Carrie Yamaoka of the New York-based queer women collective fierce pussy (formed with Zoe Leonard in 1991) speak ahead of the four members’ upcoming seasons in fall 2018 and spring 2019. Moderated by Jill Casid, Professor of Visual Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jo-ey Tang speaks with predecessors Michael Goodson (Senior Curator, Wexner Center for the Arts), James Voorhies (Dean of Fine Arts, California College of the Arts), and Assistant Director Ian Ruffino about the role of art school galleries and what it means to “take over” a space. Moderated by Michael Mercil, Professor, Interim Chair of the Department of Art at The Ohio State University.

Sable Elyse Smith, whose practice calls attention to confining structures in society and the often invisible ways in which they shape our minds or direct our bodies, focusing on quotidian violence in the institution of language and the carceral system.
