Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim Museum, is pleased to announce that two of its recent commissions, Battleground and One of Sixty-Five Thousand Gestures/NEW BODIES, will tour in 2018. Since 1984, Works & Process has offered audiences unprecedented access to leading creators and performers, and has championed and commissioned new works for the Guggenheim’s Frank Lloyd Wright–designed rotunda and Peter B. Lewis Theater. For the first time, these commissioned works will tour, beginning with a June 2018 presentation of One of Sixty-Five Thousand Gestures/NEW BODIES at Spoleto Festival USA in South Carolina. To inaugurate the touring program, Works & Process will present encore performances of these two works at the Guggenheim in January 2018.
Battleground
Ryan McNamara
Wednesday–Friday, January 10–12, 7:30 pm
Following the sold-out premiere of Battleground in 2016, Works & Process presents an encore of this “Cosplay-Battle-Ballet.” During a rare residency opportunity that spanned five months, McNamara created a one-of-a-kind work made in and for the unique architecture of the Guggenheim’s Peter B. Lewis Theater. Audience members act as embedded witnesses to the three dance squads battling for dominance in each of the space’s three zones: the Red Choir Loft, the Green Balcony, and the Blue Stage.
One of Sixty-Five Thousand Gestures/NEW BODIES
Jodi Melnick with Jared Angle, Sara Mearns, and Taylor Stanley
Sunday and Monday, January 14 and 15, 7:30 pm
This encore presentation of NEW BODIES, choreographer Jodi Melnick’s sold-out 2016 Works & Process commission and residency, weaves together dance, spoken text, and moderated discussion with live music. The performance features New York City Ballet dancers Jared Angle, Sara Mearns, and Taylor Stanley (who is dancing the role originated by Gretchen Smith), with harpsichord by composer György Ligeti, violin by composer Heinrich Biber, and commissioned music by Robert Boston. The evening also includes a performance of the solo One of Sixty-Five Thousand Gestures, choreographed by Trisha Brown and Jodi Melnick.
