Image Text MFA 2018 faculty & fellows

We are thrilled to announce that our 2018 visiting faculty and fellows for the Image Text MFA at Ithaca College will include Stephanie Barber, Nydia Blas, Tisa Bryant, Melissa Catanese, Bruno Ceschel, Tonya Foster, John Keene, Emma Kemp, Jason Livingston, Ed Panar, Elana Schlenker, Luke Stettner, Jo Ann Walters and Carmen Winant, along with ITI core faculty and program directors Nicholas Muellner and Catherine Taylor. 

We are now accepting applications for Summer 2018 admission to the low residency Image Text MFA. Our annual summer sessions begin with an exploratory workshop in which students collaborate with renowned artists, writers, curators and editors, followed by four weeks of intensive coursework. Students then work independently with their faculty mentors throughout the academic year, and gather each winter for one week in a major international cultural center (London in 2017; Mexico City in 2018). The 2018 summer session runs from June 26 to July 28.

Tuition fellowships for national and international applicants are available on a competitive basis, and room and board are provided free of charge for all accepted students during residential sessions.

Graduate students work closely with the Image Text Ithaca Symposium (a two-day event that gathers internationally-known writers and photographers for a wide range of presentations) and the ITI Press which publishes innovative text and image works by national and international writers and artists. We have released ten publications since 2015, including works by Claudia Rankine, John Keene, Tony Cokes, Christine Hume, Jo Ann Walters, Emma Kemp and Andre Bradley’s Dark Archives, which was shortlisted for both the Rencontres d’Arles Photo-Texte Book Award and the Aperture-Paris Photo First Book Award in 2016.

We welcome applicants with backgrounds in writing, photography and other lens-based media, and artists working across these forms and disciplines. Experience in both text- and image-making is not required, but applicants must submit a portfolio that demonstrates sustained work in at least one of these areas, if not both.

Overseen by program directors and core faculty Nicholas Muellner and Catherine Taylor, our faculty and fellows grow from the community we have built through our workshops, symposia and publications, including: Emily Abendroth, Ben Alper, Lucas Blalock, Federica Chiocchetti, Renee Gladman, Andre Bradley, Tony Cokes, LaTasha N. Giscombe, Christine Hume, Lucy Ives, Anna Moschovakis, Claudia Rankine, Bobby Scheidemann, Analicia Sotelo, Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, Hannah Whitaker and Matvei Yankelevich.

Facilities
Students in the MFA program have year-round access to the Park School of Communications and its state-of-the-art photography, film/video and audio facilities and equipment. These include two digital photography suites with Imacon scanners and Epson printers, analog darkroom, lighting studio, soundstages, video editing suites, and portable resources ranging from medium and large format film cameras to professional HD video equipment.

Applications are accessible online. Priority application deadline for fellowship consideration is February 1, 2018 with later applicants reviewed as space permits.
