The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University is pleased to announce its MFA exhibition, Fever Dreams, for the 13th annual Aqua Art Miami fair in December. This is the seventh consecutive year for the School—one of only a handful of academic institutions that have ever participated—to showcase an extraordinary breadth of work. The artists, all in their final year of the Georgia State MFA program, have backgrounds spanning four continents, and have exhibited their work both nationally and internationally.
Because the selection process favors nominations instead of a curatorial theme, 3rd-year MFA candidates are given the freedom to create work that best portrays their practice across disciplines, which implements thesis research and material experimentation. The Aqua Miami platform, open during Art Basel week, provides the artists with an opportunity to garner international attention and present new work to a public audience.
The work on view in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design show is multi-media, and though the artists’ work is interdisciplinary, it represents the disciplines of Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, Textiles, Ceramics, Printmaking, and Photography. This year, work will also incorporate methods and mediums such as sound, light, and interactive performance.
The Aqua program will be documented with an exhibition catalog designed by MFA graphic designer Valentina Caver, including artist Q&A’s and a featured essay authored by a respected art professional. This year’s invited guest writer and artist is Julian Hoeber, who visited the Atlanta campus and conducted studio visits with the participating ten MFA candidates:
Amelia Carley, Tyler Cieplowski, Kelli Couch, Nuni Lee, Maryam Palizgir, Judy Parady, Aaron Putt, Kirstie Tepper, Yours Truly MF, and Vanessa Yvonne
The 3rd Year MFA’s will not be the only Ernest G. Welch artists to be headed down south for Art Basel week. Ceramics/Sculpture Faculty, Christina West will be represented by Hathaway Gallery as a part of Pulse Miami Beach.
