The Royal Institute of Art continues to expand and evolve with seminars and talks with invited international guests and different collaborations.
New extended premises and the launch of a new platform for digital media
The Royal Institute of Art has expanded its premises by assuming facilities at Mindepartementet. Here a completely new platform will be launched during the fall that will encompass moving images, photography and sound. The Institute will develop the education by more closely combine the workshops with the teaching. The ambition is to create a cluster within the field of digital media that engages other parties outside of the Institute.
This will enable the Institute to foster the way in which technology and the use of artistic methods can grow freely and develop linked to a pedagogic structure and critical discourse.
Equal Before the Image?
Two days with films, seminars and discussions at Kulturhuset, Stockholm October 25 to 26 organized by Critical Images at the Royal Institue of Art in collaboration anonymous Syrian filmmakers.
How can fair representation be guaranteed in a hyper-mediated world, shaped on all sides by cameras and screens?
The question arises whilst humans live increasingly inside the images of the world rather than in the world itself. And the question becomes urgent whilst some inhabitants of our world are in effect denied the means to produce their own image, having to face politicians and the media who abuse their power of representation in contempt of human rights.
Using images from Syria as a point of departure, a country whose media representation raises fundamental questions of concern to the citizens of the world, the program Equal Before the Image? aims to contribute to this reflection. It will debate these issues through an exploration of Syrian films presented by their filmmakers.
Equal Before the Image? is organized with support from the Swedish Institute and in collaboration with Södertörn University and Stockholm University of the Arts.

Meeting place for theory and practice—a workshop for thoughts
At the same space that during the early 70’s was hosted by the legendary experimental department of Moderna museet, Filialen, and where key exhibitions for the Swedish alternative movement where carried out, Vice-Chancellor has initiated a meeting place for theory and practice. The aim is to link teaching in art theory, publication and exhibition production, seminars and a construction of a micro library.
The Institute has had the pleasure of inviting Kim West, critic, Lars Bang Larsen, curator and Stefanie Hessler, curator, as Guest Professors to run a programme series at the meeting place called Rutiga golvet. They’ve created a programme series called E2-E4 for theoretical reflection, speculation, and experimentation. The space and the programme will be incorporated in the education of the Institute and also be open to the public.

Call for applications: Project Studies for Professional Artists, before November 1
Project studies in Fine Arts are part of the RIA’s selection of courses on the advanced level with 60ECTS credits. The course is geared towards professional artists, who will be provided with the opportunity to devote an academic year to an individually designed artistic project.
The project year provides an opportunity for professional artists to carry out an independent artistic project in a self-chosen area. In addition to working with their own project, the aim of the course is to develop the skills necessary to address advanced artistic problems in a creative way. The course participants will be challenged explore their artistic processes and formulate new sets of questions through their practice.
