Pratt Institute’s MFA in Fine Arts program is accepting applications now for the fall 2018 semester. Pratt’s MFA program is ranked fifteenth nationally out of almost 300 graduate programs in fine arts by US News and World Reports, and it is housed on Pratt’s beautifully landscaped 25 acre campus in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

With its central location in Brooklyn’s thriving creative community, Pratt’s MFA program in Fine Arts immerses students in the cultures of contemporary art, supported by a faculty of working artists and peers. The graduate curriculum is both rigorous and flexible and fosters a deeper understanding of the histories, issues and cultural contexts that inform artmaking today. Pratt’s faculty members are distinguished by their achievements, exhibiting in New York and internationally and receiving awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Tiffany Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, Skowhegan, Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Creative Capital, and Art Matters.

MFA in Fine Arts

Areas of emphasis are offered in painting and drawing, integrated practices, photography, sculpture, and printmaking. Although students apply to a specific area of interest, the program encourages cross-disciplinary study. Almost half of the degree program credits are unrestricted, and students tailor their program of study to their individual interests in consultation with their faculty advisors. Students gain proficiency in every aspect of studio practice through a combination of rigorous critical discussion, a broad selection of courses and approaches, opportunities for internships and work experience in New York, and a public exhibition of thesis projects. Pratt MFA students in Fine Arts are well prepared to become significant critical and creative leaders in their fields

Outstanding New Facilities: The graduate fine arts studios, located in Brooklyn’s Pfizer Building at 630 Flushing Avenue, minutes from the main campus, feature a newly renovated 33,000-square-foot space with individual artist studios, floor-to-ceiling windows; classrooms; a split-level critique space; project rooms; and much more. Pratt provides all full-time MFA students with individual studios and access to shops and labs, including a fully-equipped wood shop, metal shop, print shop, ceramics studios, darkrooms, digital labs with high-resolution scanners and printers, as well as dedicated campus galleries.

Each semester, students open their studios to the public, and each spring, second-year students mount individual thesis shows that are also open to the public. In addition to a regular schedule of studio visits by faculty, the department’s Visiting Artist Lecture Series brings internationally renowned artists and critics to give public lectures and have individual studio visits with second-year graduate students. The graduate student-run organization, Pratt Artists League, also invites visiting artists and critics for studio visits and plans other student-generated activities and exhibitions. A 5-week interdisciplinary summer course in Rome, “City as Studio,” offers graduate students the opportunity to research and create site-specific work in an international context.
