Cranbrook Academy of Art, a preeminent graduate school of art, design and architecture seeks applications for residential teaching fellowships for the 2018-2019 academic year. Possibilities exist for one-semester or two-semester appointments. The Academy’s Critical Studies Fellowship program brings scholars from a wide range of fields to work closely with Cranbrook graduate students to explore active intersections of contemporary theory and culture studies with visual art and design practice.

“Bureaucracies of the Body”
Art historian Caroline A. Jones argues that Clement Greenberg bureaucratized vision to advocate for a modern art based on pure opticality. In the postmodern era, the body has been subject to increasingly bureaucratizing measures, including challenges to reproductive rights, racial profiling, the AIDS crisis, gender policing, gene patenting, and Big Pharma’s authority over the medical-industrial complex. For the 2018-19 fellowships, the Academy is seeking scholar-educators working on issues of the body under bureaucratic control. Proposals might consider the intersections of medicine, somaesthetics, biopower, disability studies, feminism, queer studies, nomadism, and the body in art, visual culture, and the designed environment.

Candidates must hold an advanced degree in their field (MA or higher, PhD preferred), have graduate-level teaching experience and an interest in the links between their work and a visual art/craft/design studio practice. The Fellow will have both formal and informal time with students, including public lectures, discussion groups, studio visits and critiques. Opportunities also exist for creative curatorial, research or other projects while in residence.  This position is well-suited to an emerging professional, although all levels are invited to apply. Fellows must reside on campus and be free from other professional duties during the semester. International applicants are welcome to apply. Please note:  we are not seeking candidates who are primarily studio artists or designers or a proposal of a studio-based series.

Fellowship includes:
–Stipend
–Travel allowance toward R/T travel to campus and/or professional activities
–Housing (private furnished apartment on campus)

Application must be received by December 31, 2017.

To apply, please compile a single PDF that includes:
–Completed application form: www.cranbrook.edu
–Letter of interest (please include an indication of preference for a one or two-semester fellowship)
–Proposal of a series theme for the teaching-fellowship (please outline 2 lectures and 3 related discussion topics)
