Contemporary art biennial
September 1–October 29, 2017
The 4th Tallinn Photomonth international contemporary art biennial takes place this year from September 1 to October 29.
The biennial opened on September 1 with the group exhibition Image Drain at Tallinn Art Hall and the Museum of Photography curated by Anthea Buys. Technicalities and fixed forms are shunned by the 13 artists in the exhibition. Instead, we are invited to meditate on how the visual serves to make sense of the world.
Tallinn Photomonth takes pride in being an artist led biennial. The exhibitions spread throughout different historical, industrial and modern venues. Not only the exhibition spaces, but the city itself is the biennial’s visual and tactile landscape. The second international group exhibition Fold by Fold the Widowed Stone Unrobes Itself, curated by Stefanie Hessler, opens on September 22 at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM). The citywide programme further includes exhibitions at Kanuti Gildi SAAL, ARS Project Space, Telliskivi Creative City, Puänt Bookshop, Freedom Square and Kumu Art Museum, as well as a film programme at the iconic art-house cinema Sõprus and visits to artists’ studios. Next to that, an inaugural gallery programme focusing on solo presentations of local and international artists is introduced.
Furthermore, this year’s Tallinn Photomonth expands to the city of Narva. Bordering Russia, the city has a complex socio-economic situation which naturally resonates in the work of its artists. The biennial collaborates with Narva Art Residency and Narva Art Gallery to bring attention to the city through the residency programme, exhibitions and artists’ talks.
Also a Professional Week is initiated—an intensive programme from September 26 to October 1 full of networking events, lectures, book launches, artist talks and guided tours. One of the week’s highlights is the Estonian Photographic Art Fair (September 29–October 1), introducing the works of 38 international artists, five galleries and five project spaces.
