Rome
The 1st year residency started in Rome on May 24. IDSVA newcomers hit the ground running, visiting the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Vatican Museums, Pantheon, and MACRO Museum. In the three-day whirlwind, students also attended a lecture from Ann Hamilton at the American Academy in Rome, and visited the studio of Italian artist Isabella Ducrot.

Spannocchia
Italian philosopher Franco (Bifo) Berardi joined IDSVA at Spannocchia for a special lecture series on current European art and politics in relation to the concept of the Baroque. The residency was punctuated with a trip to Florence to tour the Uffizi and Galleria dell’Accademia, and to Siena, where the group visited the Palazzo Pubblico, Santa Maria della Scala and the Duomo. Artist Franca Marini gave a lecture focusing on her work inspired by ancient Sienese painting.

Berlin
The 2nd year students started their residency with a busy week in Berlin. The cohort visited the Boros Foundation, Holocaust Memorial, Pergamon Museum, Soviet War Memorial, Jewish Museum, Hoffman Collection, Hamburger Banhof, Berlinishce Galerie and took a walking graffiti tour of the city. Dr. Howard Caygill lectured on German Idealism and Dr. George Smith gave a lecture series on Kant & Hegel.

Venice
The 1st year and 2nd year groups joined forces in Venice to attend the Biennale. Collectively the group visited the Giardini and Arsenale main sites, the Antarctic Pavilion, the Guggenheim, Palazzo Fortuny, Prada Foundation, and the Damien Hirst exhibits at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi. Before departing Venice, they enjoyed a final al fresco dinner together on the Lido Island.

Athens
The 2nd year students capped off the residency with four days in Athens. The group visited the ancient sites of the Acropolis, the Agora, and Delphi, in addition to a graffiti/street art tour and a visit to Documenta Athens. Dr. George Smith gave a lecture series on the pre-Socratics and Nietzsche. A highlight of the trip was the symposium Mapping Worlds, Crossing Borders, hosted by Dr. Simonetta Moro, Giovanni Tusa and Elina Staikou.

Colby College
IDSVA welcomed 3rd year students to Colby College in Waterville, Maine for their pre-dissertation residency. The week included conference-style student presentations of their recent Independent Studies, a seminar series on methodologies in philosophy and art by Professors Chris Yates and Simonetta Moro, and visits to the art museum and library. The residency ended with an extraordinary lecture by famed artist-philosopher and curator, Dr. David Driskell, and an evening at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, which hosted the annual Red Farm dinner and a lecture by guest artist Ron Gorchov.
