Art Basel’s 16th edition in Miami Beach 

Art Basel returns to Miami Beach this December for its 16th edition with 268 premier galleries drawn from 32 countries from across North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, presenting works ranging from Modern masterpieces to new works by both established and emerging artists. 2017 is an important year for the cultural scene in Miami with The Bass re-opening after a large-scale renovation and The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami inaugurating its new building in the heart of the Miami Design District. 

Alongside a robust roster of returning galleries, the 2017 edition of the fair features 20 galleries who are participating in the show for the first time. Art Basel in Miami Beach welcomes nine first-time participants from North and South America, including Anat Ebgi from Los Angeles; Chapter NY, David Lewis Gallery and Tyler Rollins Fine Art from New York; Inman Gallery from Houston; Patron from Chicago; Galeria Jaqueline Martins and Ricardo Camargo Galeria from São Paulo; and Isla Flotante from Buenos Aires. In addition, the 11 new exhibitors from Europe and Asia are: A arte Invernizzi from Milan; Applicat-Prazan and Ceysson & Bénétière from Paris; Dépendance from Brussels; Múrias Centeno with spaces in Porto and Lisbon; Hales Gallery, Offer Waterman and Richard Saltoun Gallery from London; Antenna Space from Shanghai; and Takuro Someya Contemporary Art and Taro Nasu from Tokyo.

Presenting 11 global leaders in the field of prints and editioned works, this year’s sector will feature: Alan Cristea Gallery, Crown Point Press, Gemini G.E.L. LLC, Sabine Knust, Carolina Nitsch, Pace Prints, Paragon, Polígrafa Obra Gràfica, STPI, Two Palms and ULAE.

The 2017 edition of Nova provides 29 galleries with a platform to present new work by up to three artists and will this year include work by Hiwa K, Teresa Margolles, Manuel Ocampo, Rosangela Renno, Santiago Sierra, Emily Sundblad, among others. As part of the Positions sector, 14 galleries will each present one major project by a single artist. Highlights will include work by Rodrigo Bueno, A.K. Burns, Jamal Cyrus, Koichi Enomoto, Jibade-Khalil Huffman, Mariela Scafati and Xu Qu.

Survey will return for its fourth year with 16 focused presentations of work created before 2000. Artists in the sector include: Rodolfo Aricò, Hércules Barsotti and Willys de Castro, Judith Bernstein, Frank Bowling, Dadamaino, Noël Dolla, Cícero Dias, David Driskell, Wesley Duke Lee, Sérvulo Esmeraldo, Carlos Leppe, Roberto Matta, Mario Nigro, Brian O’Doherty and William Turnbull, Letícia Parente, Alexis Smith, Claude Viallat and Edgardo Antonio Vigo.

This year’s edition of Kabinett, which sees galleries present a curated exhibition in a separately delineated space within their booths, will have a strong female focus and include 24 projects by Etel Adnan, Anni Albers, Taku Aramasa, Alice Attie, Ashley Bickerton, Andrea Bowers, Colette Brunschwig, Cheng Ran, Farida El-Gazzar, Flavio Garciandía, Hans Hofmann, Kim Jones, Shozo Kitadai, Kiki Kogelnik, Irene Kopelman, Brigitte Kowanz, María Martínez-Cañas, Hélio Oiticica, Kiyoji Otsuji, Pavel Pepperstein, Yoshishige Saito, Anne-Marie Schneider, Ivan Serpa, Shirana Shahbazi, Joan Snyder, Grete Stern, Bill Traylor, Katsuhiro Yamaguchi and Haegue Yang. 

Several exhibitors will also present works in the Film sector as well as in Public, Art Basel’s outdoor sector in Collins Park which will be curated for the first time by Philipp Kaiser. Further details about Film, Public and the Conversations program will be available in the coming weeks.
