The Fondation d’entreprise Ricard is giving carte blanche to artist Vincent Lamouroux, winner of the 2006 Ricard Prize*, to take over the Panorama tower of the Friche la Belle de Mai in Marseille
A place hidden at the far edge of the desert, at the confines of two states.
A long, dusty track stretching out among the dunes like a mirage.
Heavy winds hold the powerful hum of life intact, for now.
Invisible forces are at work, yet nothing filters out from the secret, highly confidential undertaking being prepared; the construction of a runway crossing through space, time and speed its own conditions for possibility.
After transforming a derelict old motel in Los Angeles in 2015 into a surface for “Projections” that could soak up all our waking dreams, Vincent Lamouroux is plotting a point of departure for new imagined geographies.
The artist will take on the desert site twofold: seeing it and depicting it—rather, highlighting it with a whitewash so overwhelming as to budge the most hardened spirits. With an almost primeval drive, New Runway reveals the forces at work, forms of life in all their desire for accomplishment, and the “power of being” running through this entire adventure.
*Every year since 1999 the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard Prize is awarded to an emerging artist on the young French art scene. With the award comes the purchase of a work that is donated to the Centre Pompidou to join its permanent collection. The Fondation d’entreprise Ricard additionally supports the realization of a project by the prize-winner abroad.
