Art fairs, exhibitions, artist films, and performances

Yet another art highlight in this year of blockbuster events such as the Venice Biennale, documenta in Athens and Kassel, or Skulptur Projekte Münster, Berlin Art Week will once again draw international attention from the world of contemporary art from September 13–17, 2017. Organized with the financial support of Berlin’s Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises, during Berlin Art Week two art fairs, 15 institutions and theatres, and 200 galleries, Berlin private collectors and project spaces will be presenting exhibitions, artist films, performances, and special programmes all dedicated to art, artists, and the places where art emerges, inviting guests from around the world to attend the major openings or enjoy intimate private viewings.
From September 14–17 the focus of Berlin Art Week will be placed on the two art fairs. The new art berlin is a collaboration between abc art berlin contemporary and Art Cologne, and will take place for the first time in 2017. It will present around 110 international and national galleries from 16 countries at Station at Gleisdreieck. The new fair will not only feature recent and established contemporary art, but modernist and post-war art as well.
The fourth POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair will return once again to Arena Berlin, showing what is important in the art world around the world: discoveries and rediscoveries, quality and a discourse that reaches both established collectors and a young audience interested in art. Strong new positions and established contemporary artists will be shown alongside works of classical modernism by around 70 exhibitors.
The visitors of this year’s Berlin Art Week can expect not only new partners and venues, but a artistically comprehensive and unique programme with openings of solo shows by Monica Bonvicini, Danny Lyon, Willem de Rooij, Daria Martin, Thomas Feuerstein, Geoffrey Farmer, and Wilson Díaz. In addition, the group show Portrait of a Nation at me Collectors Room will present the work of 50 contemporary artists from the United Arab Emirates and the Festival of Future Nows at Hamburger Bahnhof, will bring together formats by over 100 artists working across the disciplines for four days under the motto, “The challenge lies in the moment. The time is now.”
At the sixth Berlin Art Week, artist films will play a central role. The haubrok foundation in collaboration with Kino Arsenal Berlin and Villa Aurora in Los Angeles will present the art film festival la > x. The focus will be placed on films from and about L.A., with artists such as Paul McCarthy, James Benning, Lizzie Fitch/Ryan Trecartin, Morgan Fisher, Edgar Arceneaux, Jennifer West, John Baldessari, Pat O’Neill, and Kerry Tribe.
Harun Farocki was one of the most important German filmmakers of international renown: for this year’s Berlin Art Week a retrospective of his work is being held by Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) together with Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst e.V., the Harun Farocki Institut, and Savvy Contemporary. Farocki’s oeuvre encompasses more than 100 films and productions: experimental and documentary films, essay films, shorts and feature-length fictional films. His oeuvre goes far beyond this, and he enjoyed international success in the realms of art and video and installation art and as a lecturer and media theorist as well.
Berlins’ Akademie der Künste presents a film retrospective and exhibition on the virtually 50-year-long collaboration of Danièle Huillet (1936–2006) and Jean-Marie Straub (born in 1933). The couple created one of the most influential, but also controversial works of modern film, engaging with texts by Hölderlin, Kafka, Brecht, Pavese or Malraux, the music of Bach and Schönberg, or the painting of Cézanne.
Several performances and contemporary dance events will enrich the palette of contemporary performing arts. While the Belgian artist Miet Warlop at HAU Hebbel am Ufer enchants her audience in a three part work show with live sculpture and animated objects, Boris Charmatz invites guests to visit the new venue of Volksbühne Berlin at the former Tempelhof Airport for A Dancer’s Day. The visitors can follow the dancers at the expansive airport hangar and can rehearse sequences from the new dance work 10,000 Gestures with Charmatz.
