archithese is a magazine about architecture, theory, and urban design. Our latest issue, titled “Bri-Collagen,” deals with the comeback of cutting, assembling, citing, and superimposing in architecture. Vibrant collages made from elements of trivial culture, dirty bricolages of everyday items, and architectural quotations as historical references to high culture are (again) highly popular. Why are architects rediscovering these techniques?
In archithese 3.2017, Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan (Lütjens Padmanabhan), François Charbonnet (Made in), Job Floris (Monadnock), and Uwe Schröder (usarch) talk about the potentials of collage and the fragmentary in architecture. Gus Wüstemann’s house on Feldeggstrasse in Zurich and OMA’s Fondaco dei Tedeschi in Venice serve as examples to discuss built collages. Bart Lootsma examines the potential of collage and its reception in social media like Facebook and Instagram by looking at the works of Italian architects Carmelo Baglivo, Luca Galofaro, and Beniamino Servino. Kersten Geers writes about complexity in the early work of Robert Venturi in an essay accompanied by a series of photos depicting designs that attest to Venturi’s influence on current architectural production.

Inside Monadnock: Vernissage with Job Floris
archithese will celebrate the vernissage of the “Bri-Collagen” issue on October 12 at 6pm in Architekturforum Zürich (Brauerstrasse 16) with a presentation by Job Floris. He will offer exclusive insights into his collaborative work with Sandor Naus, his partner at Monadnock.
