Research Pavilion: : The Utopia of Access

The Utopia of Access features three exhibitions and 50 multidisciplinary events at the cross-section of art, science, and politics.

The University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) announces the Research Pavilion: The Utopia of Access, on view from May 11 to October 15, 2017 in the context of the 57th Venice Biennale. This year, the pavilion will host three international art exhibitions and 50 multidisciplinary Camino Events that explore the theme of open accessibility.

Taking inspiration from an EU edict proposing open access to publicly funded research, The Utopia of Access will analyze the implications of liberal policies on artistic practice. The three exhibitions and the Camino Events will examine the limits and consequences of open access in the arts, education, research, and politics.

The first exhibition, You Gotta Say Yes to Another Access, on view May 11 to July 2, 2017, will show 12 artists and artist duos exploring the openness of art, geopolitics, monetization of knowledge, and new visual techniques. Curated by Jan Kaila and Henk Slager, the exhibition will include video art, digital media, and photography installations to present how universities act as thought-laboratories within the context of art.

Artists of the exhibition are Andrea Coyotzi Borja & Sinem Kayacan, André Alves, Behzad Khosravi-Noori & René León-Rosales, Bull.Miletic, Eva Weinmayr, Mireia c. Saladrigues, Niran Baibulat, Stacey Sacks, Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec and Vincent Roumagnac.

Opening reception will be on May 10 at 6 to 9pm.

The Research Pavilion is created and hosted by University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki), and realised together with the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme (NARP) and the Swedish Art Universities’ collaboration KONSTEX, in co-operation with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Zurich University of the Arts.

With over 100 artists and artist-researchers from art universities of Northern Europe, the Camino Events range from screenings, music, seminars, to artist talks, performances and interventions.
