The development of the artistic work of Richard Kriesche covers the period from 1964 to the present day. Rarely before were such fundamental developments discernible as in this period, both within art and in the general socio-political world events. Perfomative trends such as Fluxus, Happenings, performance, Actionism and Conceptual art as well as media art were the international manifestations found in art.

Kriesche, who took part in the 34th, 42nd and 46th Biennale of Venice as well as the Documenta VI and VIII in Kassel, is today one of the prominent representatives of this extended notion of art in the international context—not just in media art. The Universalmuseum Joanneum has succeeded in acquiring a compendium consisting of around 60 key works, which encompass Richard Kriesche’s artistic development and at the same time reflect the general and international processes and dynamics. From the “numerical systems” of 1964–69 to the most recent biogenetic investigations, all the essential steps of an artistic cosmos can thus be represented and comprehended, which are presented in a comprehensive show on the Medienblock Richard Kriesche in the Neue Galerie Graz.
