This year, film will be taught by the Brazilian duo Distruktur (Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn), and photography by French photographer Valérie Jouve, who portrays people against the background of their cities. Lebanese architect Tony Chakar also focuses on the city, though not through a specific medium, but looking at the diverse interests and histories expressed in it. Since its foundation by Oskar Kokoschka in 1953, the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts has retained its international orientation. The teachers and students come from all over the world, and the courses are devoted to global questions.

Film as a Sensative Body
August 14–26
Distruktur is part of the collective LaborBerlin, which preserves analogue film as an artistic and activist medium and maintains knowledge of analogue film-making. Film is a sensitive body, used in this course for experiment. Various processes for artistic work  with analogue film will be taught—from shooting with the 16mm camera, through developing in the dark-room, to montage—and the different aesthetic qualities examined.

Valérie Jouve
Photography as a Tool of Encounters
July 17–29
French photographer and film-maker Valérie Jouve tirelessly browses the city in search of its inhabitants. Working mainly with a large-format camera, she tries to achieve a portrait of human society. The course concentrates on how to use photography for invention: how can we take a picture using intuition and heart, rather than the eye?
