The Posters exhibition devised by the Frac Normandie Rouen seeks to identify a number of issues raised by the medium’s presence among current artistic practices. Drawing on its own holdings, in addition to, and primarily from, French public collections, including the Frac Île-de-France and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (Cnap), in which the poster now features prominently, the exhibition will focus on recent trends in the image, message and graphics. It will look at new artistic attitudes to the commercial, informational and political dimensions of the medium. The show will also explore the way certain artists use the medium to rethink the concepts of flatness, pictorialism or, contrastingly, volume, re-examining by this very token, the notions of painting and sculpture. Ultimately, it will provide a forum for looking at how—through this auto-reflexive approach—the artist also considers this medium’s production and distribution system.
