At the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts a vacancy occurs for a rector to be filled by October 1, 2005.
The Schools of Visual Arts
Being an institution of higher education, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts has the task of offering education, on an artistic and scientific basis, in painting, sculpture, graphic arts, media arts and bordering art forms until the highest level, as well as of performing activities of artistic development and carrying out scientific research in the visual arts.
The education is divided into a two-year foundation course and a four-year advanced study at one of eight different professor’s schools that the students choose freely between. Further there is a Department of Art Theory, and 15 Laboratories attend to the education of mainly the technical disciplines. The study programmes are planned jointly by the professor and the students of the school with focus on the development of artistic talent and the production of art works. The Schools of Visual Arts has about 200 students, 52 full-time employees, and a budget of 34, 4 mill. DKK (in 2005). For more information, please see http://www.kunstakademiet.dk
The position
The overall responsibility for the activities of the Schools of Visual Arts rests with the rector, just as (s)he is responsible for the everyday management of staff and administration. The rector is an ex-officio member of the School Council, the supreme governing body of the Schools of Visual Arts. Among the most important tasks of the School Council is the establishing of guidelines for the Schools’ long-term activity and development.
The Schools of Visual Arts attaches importance to the ability of the rector to establish the framework of cooperation between professors, lecturers, non-teaching staff and students, and in this way secure the development of the Schools of Visual Arts and its central place in Danish and international cultural life. This should be done paying respect to the 250-year long history that traditionally has focused on the artist and the artistic activity. The artistic profile of the different professor’s schools is determined by the individual professor who is responsible for the content of the study.
The application must contain a satisfactory account of the applicant’s ideas and visions of the Schools of Visual Arts’ further development.
Qualifications
Appointment will depend mainly on the applicant’s:
– Fine leadership and interpersonal skills / Good abilities to lead and cooperate
– Extroversion and personal impact
– Understanding of political decision-making
– Detailed knowledge of the art world, both national and international.
– Possibly acquaintance with higher and/or artistic education
Great stress is especially laid on the condition that the new rector must have experience with contemporary art, on a high level, as a practising artist, researcher, teacher, mediator or the like.
Salary and conditions of appointment
The position as rector is to be filled for a fixed term of 4 years. The position classified as grade 37 is to be filled on a group contract basis, unless the appointee is already employed as a public servant. The yearly salary is 462.332,00 DKK. To this is added a rector’s allowance agreed on by the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, of 97.800 DKK (on October 1, 1997). Further, a personal allowance may be granted through negociations between the Ministry of Culture and the legitimate negotiating organization of the appointee.
If a foreigner is appointed as the new rector, (s)he is expected to learn Danish.
