Join The Kitchen for a multidisciplinary program exploring the powerful relationships between ancient technologies, dramaturgy and game. This intensive three-week laboratory offers emerging artists the opportunity to develop work integrating video, theatre, performance, dance, sound, and text. Through daily interaction with the Summer Institute’s first invited international Artistic Director, Ong Keng Sen, and a select group of professional artists from Asia and the U.S., participants juxtapose ritualistic techniques from ancient cultures with the rich landscape of interactive systems, game design and rules of play. Artist talks and mentoring sessions with industry professionals enrich the curriculum. The Institute also provides access to The Kitchen’s extraordinary video archive of performance documentation, highlighting important explorations that have made by The Kitchen, a center of multimedia activity for over 30 years.
Tuition: $2,800 USD (includes meal plan and laptop computer)

MADHU MARGI, collaborator and performer, researches the connections between contemporary practice and an ancient form of ritualized theatre in India, kudiyattum, of which he is a master
DEAN MOSS, choreographer and media artist, creates multidisciplinary works blending performance and video.
ONG KENG SEN is the Artistic Director of Theatreworks (Singapore), a founder of The Flying Circus Project, and an independent performance director/curator of multidisciplinary, cross-cultural encounters.
NAVIN RAWANCHAIKUL is known for his collaborative projects involving local communities and sources from daily life, which have often taken the form of public art installations, comic books, and questionnaires.
KATIE SALEN is a game designer, director of the Parsons School of Design Graduate Design and Technology Program, and co-author (with Eric Zimmerman) of Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals (MIT Press, 2004).
CHRISTINA YANG has been Summer Institute Director since 2003 and is an independent art historian, curator and writer.
YASUKO YOKOSHI imaginatively entwines cultures and personal insights to create radical performance works.
THE KITCHEN is one of New York City’s oldest nonprofit performance and exhibition spaces, showing experimental work by innovative artists, both emerging and established. Programs range from dance, music, and theatrical performances to video and media arts exhibitions to literary events, film screenings, and artists’ talks. Since its inception in 1971, The Kitchen has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country and has helped launch the careers of many artists who have gone on to worldwide prominence.
SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE, long recognized as a pioneer in creative education, is a liberal arts college with focused and collaborative undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts. Learning and using a diverse and global vocabulary, students experiment with the resources and connections of writing, art, music, dance, and emerging technology. The process emphasizes the exploration of individual artistic techniques, which results in the development of new voices creating original performance works.
