The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis seeks candidates for the position of curator to join our museum team as we move into new facilities opening in fall 2006. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki, the new building will include 2 temporary exhibition galleries and a permanent collection gallery, totaling approximately 10,000 sq. ft., and a 10,000 sq. ft. outdoor sculpture garden. As a nationally accredited art museum that is part of a top ten research institution, the Kemper’s focus is interdisciplinary, international, and intellectual, serving both the university and the major metropolitan St. Louis area. The curator is responsible for developing and implementing new and existing curatorial programs in coordination with the director, including temporary collection and loan exhibitions, interdisciplinary faculty exhibition projects, and permanent collection displays. The curator also oversees management of the collection, which includes significant holdings of 19th- and 20th-century American and European paintings, sculptures, and prints as well as major contemporary works. This is a two year position with the possibility of becoming permanent. Interviews will begin July 6, 2005. The position will remain open until filled. Requirements:
Ph.D. in Art History with specialty in modern and contemporary American art; minimum of three years museum experience; demonstrated success with exhibitions and scholarly museum publications. Teaching experience preferred. Must be able to collaborate with university faculty, museum staff, professional colleagues, and museum supporters. Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to supervise and motivate others; budgetary responsibilities; grant writing and other fundraising experience.
