The current MFA students in Art, Photography, and Integrated Media at California Institute of the Arts are pleased to announce the 2006 MFA Open Studios event. On Sunday, April 9th between the hours of 2 pm and 7 pm, 50 graduate students will open their studios to the public. Visitors are invited to get an insider’s look into the abundance of diverse art practices currently taking place at CalArts, where students are thoughtfully exploring and expanding the limits of cultural production in contemporary society.
CalArts’ MFA Programs in Art, Photography and Integrated Media have produced an impressive range of influential contemporary artists. Notable CalArts alumni include Sam Durant, Mike Kelley, Liz Larner, Dave Muller, Rubén Ortiz-Torres, Catherine Opie, Laura Owens, Lari Pittman, Christopher Williams, and James Welling among many others.
The Open Studios event provides an opportunity for visitors to CalArts to preview works in progress and converse with artists in a comfortable, informal setting. Each artist will be present in his or her studio throughout the above listed hours to discuss and answer questions about their work.
The CalArts campus is only a 30-minute drive from downtown Los Angeles. All those interested are encouraged to preview students’ work on the 2006 Open Studios website (http://alum.calarts.edu/~studios). A reception will follow with musical performances, drinks, and barbeque.
California Institute of the Arts educates professional artists in a critical environment committed to artistic innovation and intellectual rigor. Throughout its history, CalArts has sought to advance the practice of art and promote its dialogue with a broader social, cultural and historical context.
