We are pleased to announce the exhibition, “Goods to Declare – MFA International”, an exhibition celebrating the centenary of the Academy. “Goods to Declare” will be held at the abandoned old terminal of Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv and will present a selection of works by 51 artists currently graduating from 15 international MFA and Advanced Studies Programs in fine art. We hope to create a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas between artists of the same generation from different places and cultures. Although the airport terminal is not the theme of the exhibition, it may serve as a metaphor for the moment of graduation, before departing into the “real” art world.

What Will You Ever Do With That Degree?

Change is underfoot. “The MFA is the New MBA” is one of the top ten Breakthrough Ideas making the Harvard Business Review’s annual list. Asked about his vision for General Motors, the Vice Chairman of Global Product Development Robert Lutz answered: “I see us as being in the art business. Art, entertainment, and mobile sculpture, which coincidentally, happens to provide transportation.” Corporate recruiters are hiring recent MFAs from distinguished schools, not to make art, but to be thinkers, innovators and change agents in a new creative economy. Beyond this trend, Joseph Nye, Dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, encourages cultural producers to take seriously the relevant effects art and entertainment are having as forms of “soft power” in the larger world. MFA’s are being given new responsibilities, relevance and power, but are graduate faculties preparing them for these roles? How should MFA faculties account for this new scope of influence in their curricula while addressing the ethical, cultural and public policy questions they entail? Should they shun, embrace or just try to manage this next episode in what it means to educate an MFA?

Our moderator, the artist and critic Ronald Jones will present the distinguished panel a hypothetical controversy designed to explore emerging roles for MFAs in the larger world while unpacking vital cultural, ethical, legal and public policy questions.
