Founding the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) and the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) in 1992, the aim of Heinrich Klotz was to link teaching and research in order to refer the traditional arts to media technology. This can be seen as a continuation of the “Bauhaus”-concept: digital design next to the classical arts and design supplemented by the science of art, media theory and philosophy. The architectural conditions of a former ammunition factory allowed to house both institutions in one single building, therefore the projected vision could be realised. The incorporation of the Museum for Contemporary Art (MNK) 1997 again, expanded the spectrum. But at the same time this circumstance led the HfG into a challenging position in terms of standing up to those major institutions.

The interdisciplinary exhibition project “1234567” makes the attempt to mark off the HfG, that is often perceived as a transition between the ZKM and MNK only, as an independent exhibition space in order to overcome this transit-situation.

The architectural intervention that is disposed only in citations, brakes with familiar structures thus to bring time and space into being for a conscious perception for what is shown. The curators will present a selection of about fifty works that were developed within the past months, respectively site specifically produced for 1234567.

Topographical issues such as death, sexuality, surveillance as well as the question of urban and architectural structures occupy a significant space within the exhibition. It is remarkable how fresh and new these topics are transported on different medial layers.

Further part of the project is a program in the evening – music and performance within the exhibition space. In doing this the curators want to make an attempt to provide an equivalent platform for those positions that are challenging in terms of presentation.
