The relationship between culture, art institutions and medial strategies takes centre stage in the “Moirés” exhibition. What kind of “images” do art institutions produce and which images are used to communicate culture? During recent years it has been possible to observe that the function and conditions of contemporary art and its institutions have been significantly transformed under the influence of the trend towards event culture. Art and culture increasingly follow a corporate logic; they are perceived as both location factor and tourist attraction alike and are utilised for the strengthening of local, regional and national identities.

These observations form the background to the “Moirés” exhibition. Using a variety of artistic means Andreas Fogarasi, Katya Sander and the art and media research group Urtica focus upon the essential conditions of contemporary art and image production in an altered media landscape and establish a moment of difference with their reflections. The title of the exhibition–an allusion to the technical term for an interference pattern in images–serves thus as a metaphor for artistic procedures that observe these processes and at the same time create divergent individual working methods within art as
an institution.

Whether in relation to global marketing strategies developed by art museums, to the context of pictograms and behavioural patterns or to the question regarding the “public”, “the audience” and the subject of the media–Andreas Fogarasi, Katya Sander and Urtica combine an external view with a great sensitivity for and attentiveness to the context of the exhibition and its aesthetic, cultural and architectural properties.

“Moirés” is carried out within the framework of transform.eipcp.net
and with the support of the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union.
