MaHKU
Since 2004 the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (MaHKU)* has been the sole master program in the Netherlands to offer a one-year, interdisciplinary graduation course in artistic research. Through an intensive seminar program with artists, designers, architects, curators, and theorists, two main research themes are addressed. Departing from the question of intermediality, the department of MA Fine Art focuses on the position of the artistic image in a culture of visual information, whereas the department of MA Design focuses on topical forms of engagement from a transdisciplinary attitude. These research trajectories are developed and realized in close collaboration (Utrecht Consortium) with global and local partners.
Dutch Artistic Research Event: DARE # 3, August 29 – September 23.
During 2006 MaHKU (The Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design/Professorship Artistic Research) initiated a series of research activities resulting in an annual manifestation named Dutch Artistic Research Event (DARE). The third edition of this event will take place from August 29 – September 23. Four locations in the city of Utrecht – Expodium, Academiegalerie, Centraal Museum and Dutch Design Center/Pastoe – will not only be platforms for graduate presentations, but will also offer room for research-screenings and parallel panel discussions.
Opening DARE # 3: August 29, pm 5-9
Dutch Design Center pm 5-8, Academiegalerie pm 7-9.
Academiegalerie: Minrebroederstraat 16, Utrecht.
Dutch Design Center/Pastoe: Rotsoord 3. Utrecht.
Curator: Bart Witte, director Expodium, Utrecht.
International Symposium: SPATIAL PRACTICES, September 12.
In addition, in the context of DARE # 3, an international symposium will take place in Utrecht’s Centraal Museum (Nicolaaskerkhof 10, September 12: 10-17)
Theme: Spatial Practices. In recent years the term spatial practice has been established as a term to describe new forms of interdisciplinary (research) practices that are responding to the rapid transformations of the contemporary city and the politics of territorial relations. Spatial practice both describes the critical analysis of spatial relations, and various forms of interventionist strategies that are being devised by architects, artists, designers, urbanists and curators.
Introductions by Henk Slager (Dean MaHKU). Jeroen Boomgaard (Professor Art and Public Space, Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam: moderator) and Andreas Mueller (Researcher Jan Van Eyck Academy: moderator/co-curator DARE # 3 symposium).
Presentations by: Apolonija Sustersic (Phd Researcher Malmo School of Art), Staffan Schmidt (PhD Researcher Gothenburg School of Art), Philipp Misselwitz (Urban Catalyst, Berlin), Doina Petrescu (Atelier d’architecture autogeree, Paris), Heidi Sohn and Miguel Robles Duran (Urban Asymmetries, Technical University Delft).
