Our graduate Computer Art program continuously redefines itself through creative experimentation and the discovery of new artistic interpretations of today’s technology. A literal Who’s Who of the New York art world, our faculty is composed of internationally renowned artists, curators, critics and professionals. Completely renovated in 2007, our state-of-the-art facility contains leading edge hardware and software. Students in our program come from around the world to study at SVA, and the international student body provides unique perspectives that offer different cultural approaches to the creative process.
Creativity and the development of a personal artistic style are the cornerstones of our program, with the goal of graduating digital artists who will produce significant creative work throughout their careers and become leaders in their chosen field. Students follow a course of study that is individually tailored. The wide range of classes provides for specializations that include animation, motion graphics, digital video, installation and digital fine art, interactive and networked media, performance and sound art–and also allows students to choose multi-disciplinary study. Our Digital Art Seminar series, guest lectures and visiting artist program provide in-depth exposure to all areas of digital art. First-year courses in studio, computer systems and art history provide the foundation for second-year thesis work, which is supported through weekly critiques and advanced areas of study.
The success of our program is best described as a “tradition of excellence.” The Department was recently named one of the “Top Ten Digital Arts Schools in the World,” by ImagineFX magazine (United Kingdom) and US News & World Report has ranked us seventh in Multimedia/Visual Communication’s graduate schools. Our graduates are employed by the most prestigious studios–Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, Pacific Data Images, Rhythm & Hues, Blue Sky, Digital Domain, MTV, Electronic Arts and Eyebeam, while others choose entrepreneurship with their own businesses. Those who pursue fine art careers have exhibited their work in galleries and museums: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S.1/MoMA, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, European Media Art Festival, Picasso Foundation and Tate Digital.
Awards that have been bestowed upon our students include Student Academy Awards (2007, 2006, 2004), 2007 Webby Award, 2006 YouTube Award, 2006 Adobe Design Achievement Award, SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater and Art Show, Prix Ars Electronica, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Inter-Society for Electronic Arts and the Leonardo Award for Excellence. Student works have appeared in such acclaimed international festivals as the Cannes Film Festival, Annecy, Ottawa International Animation Festival, Sundance Online Film Festival and the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. Student work has appeared in over 150 festivals, screenings and exhibitions during the past year.
