Students will collaboratively design and build the components of their studio space — a program laboratory built on the principles of innovation and sustainable design. With a nod to Black Mountain College and Bauhaus, the joint MFA in Applied Craft and Design workshop in early September 2009 will empower students to think and design collaboratively, according to Reuer, a LEED accredited architect and licensed general contractor, founder of JP Reuer, Architect, PA, Reuer Associates Inc. and founding member of DesignBox.
The joint MFA in Applied Craft and Design represents a fusion of design and craft traditions that offer students the opportunity to create original work with an applied purpose. The founding of the joint MFA bolsters the cooperative efforts of Portland’s two oldest art colleges, OCAC and PNCA, by creating a program that offers students opportunities for creative work that connects craft, design and environmentalism within a rich academic and creative practice.
Director of the Neighborhood Design/Build Studio at University of Washington, Badanes is also a founding member of Jersey Devil, a design/build practice specializing in innovative, energy-efficient structures. His 30 years of experience includes international projects ranging from the U.S. and Mexico, India, Cuba and Europe. He has conducted design/build workshops at the University of Technology in Helsinki; McGill University, Montreal; and the University of California at San Diego, among others. He is a frequent speaker at architecture schools across the United States and internationally.
Application deadline is March 15, 2009.
