Research Interventions
The entrance of IUAV’s central building, the Tolentini, seems to strikingly symbolize the rite de passage art education goes through today, i.e. the process of academization and the transition of studio-based tutorials to research-based seminars. The display system in the Tolentini corridor is the point of departure for a series of eight artistic reflections on the current transient position and situation of art, education, and research. Contributions by Eija Liisa Ahtila, Jeremiah Day, Jan Kaila, Pekka Kantonen, Glen Loughran, Andrew Stones, Steven de Vleminck and Mick Wilson.

Symposium
The starting point of the symposium is Daniel Birnbaum’s keynote statement – open to the general public – on Saturday, 6 June. Location: Faculty of Visual Arts and Design, Sede delle Terese, Dorsoduro, 2206, 11-12.30pm.

Next, three workshops will take place also based on the research interventions pre-sented in the Tolentini corridor. The workshops will focus on specific issues such as:
1. Competencies: Is it possible to map the various skills required for a post-graduate (research) program? Presentations: Pekka Kantonen (Helsinki), Glen Loughran (Dublin). Moderated by Jan Cools, Sint-Lukas Brussels and Henk Slager, MaHKU Utrecht.
2. Didactic Strategies: Could one determine how a graduate program (MA, PhD) is characterized? Presentations: Jeremiah Day (Utrecht), Steven de Vleminck (Brussels). Moderated by Jan Kaila, Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki.
3. Research Environment: Is it the task of the academy to develop a specific artistic research environment? Presentations: Eija Liisa Ahtila (Helsinki), Andrew Stones (London). Moderated by Mick Wilson, Gradcam, Dublin.
