GLASGOW SCULPTURE STUDIOSAUTUMN PUBLIC PROGRAMME ANNOUNCEMENTThis year’s Public Programme will launch in October 2009 with a solo exhibition of newly commissioned sculptural work, made specifically for the main gallery, by internationally renowned sculptor, Siobhán Hapaska, Hapaska’s first residency and solo exhibition in Scotland.
Hapaska was born in 1963 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and has lived and worked in London for over 27 years.
Hapaska’s work explores themes of conflict and resolution, both domestic and political, juxtaposing natural and synthetic materials to create sculptural works united by a thoughtful and coherent analysis of human interaction. Hapaska’s work addresses issues of communication, interiority, subjugation versus domination, loneliness and hurt, presenting each serious topic with an element of humour and an underlying hopefulness.
Recent group exhibitions include Life? Biomorphic Forms in Sculpture, Kunthaus Graz, Austria (2009) and Micro-narratives: tentation des petits realities, Musee d’Art Moderne de Saint Etienne (2008), along with a solo exhibition of newly commissioned work for Camden Arts Centre, London (2007). Hapaska exhibited in Docmuneta X (1997), represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale (2001), won the Paul Hamlyn Award (2003) and has exhibited widely throughout Europe and internationally. Hapaska is represented by Kerlin Gallery, Dublin and Tanya Bonakdar, New York.

Hapaska has been invited to deliver a talk as part of The Glasgow School of Art’s prestigious Friday Event organised by the School of Fine Art. The lectures are an integral part of the academic programme of the undergraduate, postgraduate, and the research community.
GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP 2008-2009
Carla Scott Fullerton’s one-year Graduate Fellowship is coming to a close at the end of October 2009 and will culminate in a solo exhibition of new sculptural work in our project gallery, along with an ambitious outdoor sculpture. Fullerton’s work combines a variety of materials, such as poured concrete, wood and metal, to produce sculptural forms that evoke architectural associations.

RESEARCH RESIDENCY 2008-2010
AHM (Sam Ainsley, David Harding, Sandy Moffat) are three of Scotland’s cultural figures who are recognised individually as having contributed enormously to Glasgow as a leading centre for contemporary art, to the city’s cultural life in general, and as promoters of Scotland’s art and culture around the world.
AHM are working on a series of online conversations with GSS Members and other key cultural figures within Scotland, and are developing a unique symposium in partnership with GSS and Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), which will take place in October 2010; the first time the ground floor of GoMA will be used for public debate, discussion and dissemination of ideas.
