Susan S. Szenasy has been Editor in Chief of “Metropolis,” the award-winning New York City-based magazine of architecture, culture and design since 1986. As a longtime professor of Design Ethics at New York’s Parsons School of Design she has worked to instill the values of responsible sustainability on the next generation.

Susan has authored several books and sits on the boards of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER), FIT Interior Design, the Center for Architecture, and the Landscape Architecture Foundation. She is an honorary member of the American Society for Landscape Architects. Along with METROPOLIS Publisher Horace Havemayer III, Susan was a 2007 recipient of the Civitas August Heckscher Award for Community Service and Excellence. She lives in the East Village in a small loft designed by Harry Allen, where she moved to reduce her ecological footprint.

Mary Ellen Carroll is a conceptual artist based in Houston and New York City. She has received numerous honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Fellowship, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, and a Pollack-Krasner Award. Her work has been at the Whitney Museum; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Museum für Völkerkunde, Munich; and The Museum of Modern Art, Vienna. A monograph of her work will be published this spring by steidlMACK. Carroll teaches architecture at Rice University.

Nataly Gattegno and Jason Kelly Johnson are founding design partners of Future Cities Lab, an experimental design and research office based in San Francisco. They were the 2008-09 Muschenheim and Oberdick Fellows at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; the 2009 New York Prize Fellows at the Van Alen Institute, New York; and exhibited work at the 2009 Hong Kong and Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture. They teach at California College of the Arts and the University of California, Berkeley.

Since the late 1960’s, Allan Wexler has drawn from the fields of the visual arts, architecture, and design to examine art’s place and purpose. Wexler’s recent solo exhibitions include Ronald Feldman Gallery, NYC; San Francisco Museum of Art; and Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, NY. His public commissions can be seen at the Hudson River Park, NYC; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; Long Island Railroad terminal, Brooklyn, and others. He received the Henry J. Leir Prize presented by the Leir Charitable Foundations. His “Gardening Sukkah” was selected as best work in “Reinventing Ritual: Contemporary Art and Design for Jewish Life” at The Jewish Museum in 2010. Wexler teaches at Parsons The New School for Design.

“Envelopes” is guest curated by Christopher Hight, an associate professor at Rice University’s School of Architecture. Hight is co-editor of AD: Collective Intelligence in Design, Heterogeneous Space, and has recently published a book on cybernetics, post-humanism, formalism, and post-World War II architectural design, titled Architectural Principles in the Age of Cybernetics.
