Inside the Studio: Artists’ Visits

Fridays: Optional study visits
This 4-week summer study course takes students into the work spaces of leading and emerging contemporary artists such as Marilyn Minter, Will Cotton, Vik Muniz, Dan Graham, Jeremy Kost and 3as4. Lectures on topics in contemporary practice set the context for the visits to studios in and around New York City, and participants see artists working across a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, performance, and installation.
Students learn about the myriad methods of art production today, both studio-based and otherwise, and have the opportunity to interact with the artists.
The course is led by Kathy Battista, Director of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art – New York.
Art and Its Markets

This course introduces students to the market for modern and contemporary art. Students examine how the primary and secondary markets function and gain a solid understanding of key market concepts as well as practical tools for understanding and evaluating prices for contemporary art.
Impressionism to Now

Fridays: Optional study visits
This course provides an intensive introduction to modern and contemporary art. It allows students to study different movements, schools and the kinds of visual art-making practices that have proliferated since the late nineteenth century. No previous art experience is required.
How to Run a Gallery
Monday & Wednesday, 10.00am – 12.00pm

Fridays: Optional study visits
This course examines what it takes to start and run a successful gallery. Participants gain an overview of the gallery business, from initial funding and forming an artist roster, to exhibition planning and marketing and communications strategies.

Art Marketing & Communications

This course looks at the full range of marketing approaches that visual arts businesses and organizations use to communicate to the public about their activities, attract collectors and visitors and build the reputation and credibility of their artists and their own institutional brands.
Emerging Markets in the Global Art World

An overview of contemporary art from emerging markets such as China, Korea, India and the Middle East. By examining relevant artists’ work, gallery visits, and discussions with specialists at auction houses and museums, this course examines the dynamic developments in regions that lie beyond what was once neatly defined as “the West”.
Art and Collectors

Fridays: Optional study visits
Examining the motivations of both historical and contemporary art collectors and the impact on the market and on art practice, this course lets students investigate the changing taste and historical trends in collecting, the economics of collecting (supply and demand), connoisseurship, and aesthetics.
Contemporary Art in New York

Fridays: Optional study visits
This course provides an insider’s look at today’s vibrant contemporary art market in New York through gallery, museum, private foundation, auction house, and collection visits. Students gain an understanding of both contemporary art history and the newest developments coming out of Basel, Berlin, Brooklyn and other important art markets.
Modern Design
Monday & Wednesday, 3.00pm – 5.00pm

Fridays: Optional study visits
This course traces the evolution of Modern design from its roots in the mid nineteenth century up through the post-war period. Covering major moments in the modern aesthetic including Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and the International Style, this course explores the work of major figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, and Charles Eames among others.
