2010 MFA Screening of Time-Based Media
A broad selection of film, video, and sound art by graduating MFA students, the 2010 MFA Screening of Time-Based Media presents an opportunity for all graduating MFA students to screen work produced in time-based media. Exhibiting varied sensibilities, yet a shared commitment to exploration and to expanding the expressive potential of time-based media, these films, videos, and sound pieces offer a context for rethinking the ways in which meaning is found and how we come to perceive.

2010 MFA Film and Video Screening
The premiere of a wide-ranging selection of film and video art by SFAI’s graduating MFA students, the 2010 MFA Film and Video Screening—Transitions—presents a class of emerging artists whose artistic lexicon has been informed by the ubiquity of the moving image. Each of the works encourages viewers to reflect not only upon experiments in audiovisual form—experimentation for which the SFAI Film department is internationally recognized—but also upon the communicative impulses that impel and guide such experiments.

Get a head start on future graduation cycles at SFAI’s Summer Institute 2010.
This summer’s highlights include a focus on Public Practices, which embrace the many and varied strategies for placing contemporary art in the public realm:
• Art in Public Places—an interdisciplinary studies course, including two weeks of travel to Mexico City, led by artist and architect Pedro Reyes, in which students will conceptualize, research, design, and implement a site-specific artwork for the Consulate General of the United States in Tijuana, Mexico
• Mural Painting as Public Representation—a painting/urban studies course led by mural artist Susan Kelk Cervantes that examines mural painting as a unique form of contemporary public art capable of redefining public spaces relative to their various histories
• Public Art Now—an art history course led by art historian Terri Cohn that examines artists’ evolving ideologies about, and approaches to, creating art in public places since the 1970s
• Sustainable Sculpture Studio—a sculpture/design and technology course led by artist Kate Ruddle that examines the politics and processes of sustainability through a materials-based case study (recycled denim)
• People and Places—the inaugural symposium on public practices in honor of former SFAI faculty member and artist Ann Chamberlain, including conversations with artists Andrea Bowers, Harrell Fletcher, Jessica Hobbs, Pedro Reyes, Susan Schwartzenberg, and other speakers to be announced

San Francisco Art Institute
Founded in 1871, SFAI is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of higher education in contemporary art in the US. Focusing on the interdependence of thinking, making, and learning, SFAI’s academic and public programs are dedicated to excellence and diversity.
SFAI’s School of Studio Practice concentrates on developing the artist’s vision through studio experiments and is based on the belief that artists are an essential part of society. It offers a BFA, an MFA, and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate in Design and Technology, Film, New Genres, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture/Ceramics.
SFAI’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies is motivated by the premise that critical thinking and writing, informed by an in-depth understanding of theory and practice, are essential for engaging contemporary global society. It offers degree programs in Exhibition and Museum Studies (MA only), History and Theory of Contemporary Art (BA and MA), and Urban Studies (BA and MA).
SFAI’s Dual Degree MA/MFA program is ideally designed for students who seek a deep and balanced immersion in both theoretical discourse and art practice. A three-year commitment, the degree consists in an MA in History and Theory of Contemporary Art and an MFA in any area of study within the School of Studio Practice (see above).
