Graduate Program in Visual and Performing Arts
The Graduate Program in Visual and Performing Arts

Founded in 2001 as a part of the Faculty of Arts & Design, the program has managed in just six years to form a Faculty of the best theorists in the arts, theatre and related fields, and prestigious professors of aesthetics, semiotics, psychology and art economics in Italy.

The program is one of its kind for having brought together a wide and varied number of scholars from the professional world. Students have had the opportunity to attend workshops by artists, directors, dramaturgs and stage, costume or light designers like Csaba Antal, Monique Arnaud, Maja Bajevic, Lewis Baltz, Tania Bruguera, Romeo Castellucci, Jimmie Durham, Olafur Eliasson, Frédéric Flamand, Guido Guidi, Runa Islam, Mona Hatoum, Armin Linke, Vera Marzot, Joseph Kosuth, Antoni Muntadas, Klaus Obermayer, Margherita Palli, Giulio Paolini, Cesare Pietroiusti, Dominique Pitoiset, Marjetica Potrc, Luca Ronconi, Remo Salvadori, Lewis Baltz, Tobias Rehberger, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Grazia Toderi and Francesco Vezzoli, amongs the others. Both spoken and musical Theatre will be considered. Many courses are transferables from similar programs in Theatre, Design and Visual Communication. Exhibition workshops have been held by professors such as Carlos Basualdo, Francesco Bonami, Cornelia Lauf, Gloria Moure, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Pierre Rosenberg, Benjamin Weil. There are also high level conferences and seminars organized by a research group of the Iuav program, Making exhibitions to Make History. It congregates theoricians, Phd students, curators and artists reflecting on transversal issues in contemporary culture. Every year the list of the professors changes. There have always been links and collaborations with the Venice Biennale, Teatro La Fenice and Teatro Due di Parma, where the students can do workshops and practice.

The alternation between workshops and theory based courses allows students to measure themselves with various approaches to the visual arts and theatre. Thus, students are able to personalize their educational experience freely, and with ample influence from various maestros.

This is a list of some of the alumni who graduated from this faculty: among the artists Alberto Tadiello, Antonio Cataldo, Nemanja Cvijanovic and the Pathosformel ensemble; among the curators, Irene Calderoni, Chiara Vecchiarelli, Daniela Zangrando.
