Conference panels will explore topics such as the relation between image and text, the space of the social, mediums of exchange, language and translation, relationships within and between pictures, virtual relationality, and loss or the notion of the “incomplete” in relationships. The conference roundtable will feature Lauren Berlant, Aden Kumler, and W.J.T. Mitchell.

Organized by Andrew Beccone, Jennifer Cohen, Hannah Klemm, and Mackenzie Schneider
The exhibit includes a temporary site-specific branch of The Reanimation Library (www.reanimationlibrary.org), an independent collection of books that have fallen out of mainstream circulation. Several artist collectives and collaborators, have been invited to use these books as inspiration for their work. Visitors may “harvest” text or images by using provided scanners and photocopiers. Works by current and recent MFA students relating to the themes of the conference will also be on display alongside the Reanimation Library.

Leo Bersani is professor emeritus of French at the University of California, Berkeley. He is considered a founder of queer theory and is known for working across a number of disciplines such as literature and literary criticism, psychoanalysis, cinema studies, art history, and aesthetics.

Art historian and critic Kathryn Hixson and artist Anne Wilson will present the many collaborative relationships that revolved around the artist’s 2010 exhibition “Wind/Rewind/Weave” at the Knoxville Museum of Art.
Discussion: Buzz Spector and Terry Smith

Artist Buzz Spector and art historian Terry Smith will hold a lunch-time discussion on the subject of the artist’s book. This conversation will range from the work of Art & Language, a variety of artist-published alternatives such as WhiteWalls, as well as other contemporary practices associated with the artist’s book.
