Students are encouraged to rigorously examine their philosophical and cultural preconceptions and to experiment with their artistic expression and the relationship their art has to contemporary culture and the larger world. This is done with the guidance of a fulltime studio faculty of professionally active artists: Roger Bisbing, David Carbone, JoAnne Carson, Leona Christie, Adam Frelin, Phyllis Galembo, Danny Goodwin and Edward Mayer, and a complement of accomplished part time faculty: William Jaeger, Ray Felix, Brian Lynch, Melinda McDaniel, Sanford Mirling, Shane Selzer, Geoff Young and Aryn Zev.
A lively schedule of Visiting Artist lectures, presentations and critiques is integral to the program. A partial list of visitors includes: Janine Antoni, Michael Ashkin, Alex Bag, Xu Bing, Luca Buvoli, Catherine Chalmers, Petah Coyne, E.V.Day, Ellen Driscoll, Elana Herzog, Matthew Day Jackson, Ken Johnson, Elizabeth King, William Pope L., Julian LaVerdiere, Jason Middlebrook, Danica Phelps, Peter Saul, Simparch, James Siena, Roberta Smith, Ned Smyth, Julianne Swarz, Brian Tolle, Gregory Volk, Ed Winkleman, The Yes Men.
Spacious private studios are provided with 24/7 access in the Fine Arts Building and the Boor Sculpture Studio, http://www.albany.edu/finearts/boor.shtml a state-of-the-art stand-alone facility with foundry, metal, wood, fabrication studios, a digital media suite, and classrooms for traditional and emerging media.
Tuition is in keeping with the SUNY mission: affordable. The Albany location, ideally situated in the northeastern corridor is 2.5 hours from New York City, 3 from Boston, 3.5 from Montreal with proximity to the best museums and art galleries in the country including nearby MASS MOCA. Albany museums and galleries and other shared resources include programs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the College of St. Rose, and the Tang Teaching Museum.
