Jeremiah Day
VU, Amsterdam, February 22 19:30
maHKU, Utrecht, February 23 16:30
In addition, the talk will introduce the subject matter and practical structure of Day’s Doctoral work, a series of both reflective and speculative projects, each of which will maintain a public form and commemorative aspect. The art-into-life experimentalism of Allan Kaprow and Hannah Arendt’s insistence on storytelling and memory’s role in the polis and “the web of human relations” will both stand as exemplary practices and touchstones for the broader project, which will in turn reflect upon the relevance and consequence of these two very different figures.
The talk in Amsterdam will focus on questions around the artistic problems of the representation of political experience and the fractured transmission of historical memory. The talk in Utrecht will introduce Day’s upcoming 2011 project exploring the work of the Hannah Arendt in the context of contemporary art through a series of public events in London, Berlin and the Netherlands. The talk at the Free University will be introduced by Wouter Davidts and at maHKU by Henk Slager. Discussions will follow both presentations.
Wouter Davidts is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Free University in Amsterdam. Between 2003 and 2008 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning of Ghent University, where he obtained a PhD on museum architecture in 2003.
Henk Slager is Dean of the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (maHKU), where he is Professor of Artistic Research and General Editor of maHKUzine, Journal of Artistic Research. He is one of the founding members of the European Artistic Research Network (EARN). http://www.artresearch.eu
