Summer Arts at The School of the Arts
Every summer, Columbia University School of the Arts welcomes more than 300 students to work with internationally renowned artists and arts scholars on Columbia’s campus in New York City—bringing together the unparalleled cultural and academic opportunities of an Ivy League University in one of the world’s arts capitals.
Summer students choose from a diverse range of 20+ master classes, workshops, and credit and non-credit courses in Film, Writing, Visual Arts, and Theatre Arts, taught by School of the Arts and visiting faculty. These courses are designed to engage and appeal to individuals at all levels of artistic experience, from beginning to professional artists.

The Television Writing IntensiveInstructor: Frank Pugliese
May 23–July 1
A concentrated and encompassing introduction to the field of television writing, designed to prepare students for the professional worlds of sit-coms, one-hour dramas and procedurals. Gain the knowledge and authority to explore, examine and create the kind of groundbreaking work that is taking over cable and making its way onto the networks, here and around the world. Work on your own pilot and meet with some of TV’s most influential writers, producers, and industry professionals.
The Arts Collaboration LabInstructor: Gideon LesterJuly 5–24
A pioneering, intensive summer workshop in conjunction with PS 122, New York’s legendary downtown arts and performance center. The Lab will create a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary artistic community at Columbia University School of the Arts. Artists and students from theatre, film, performance, visual arts and music will work together to study collaborative techniques, develop new projects, and share ideas.
Advanced Painting IntensiveInstructor: Gregory AmenoffMay 23–July 1
A group of up to twelve students will engage together in individual and group critique, technical tutorials, exposure to the New York gallery and museum worlds, and lectures by nationally known visiting artists. Tailored to those who want to challenge and advance their work in an immersive and nurturing environment, and to those who want to develop a strong visual portfolio and written package appropriate for MFA program applications.
Paris Then and Now: Circles of InfluenceInstructors: Stacy D’Erasmo and Amy BensonJuly 3–30
Live, write, and study at Columbia’s satellite campus in Paris with School of the Arts Writing faculty and some of Paris’ most celebrated contemporary writers in this intensive four-week program. Focus on the mutual influences among French and English-speaking writers, from Modernism to the present moment, while writing your own fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, inspired by this storied cultural capital and one of the most important literary traditions in history.
