The MFA program at Cornell University supports creative and intellectual practice by a critically expansive pedagogy, informed by both Western and global practices and ideas. The program provides generous accommodations and rich resources, encourages independent thinking, and fosters an ambitious range of interdisciplinary studio practice.
Ours is an intensive program whose scale belies the exceptional breadth and integration of its context.
As part of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP), students in the Department of Art engage with a rich spatial/urban/architectural context emerging through rapid globalization, explosive media, technological innovations, and issues of sustainability.
Students have ample opportunity to take courses from the abundant offerings in humanities and sciences at Cornell, developing a broadened understanding of research-based artistic practice.
Due to an excellent student-faculty ratio, each student enjoys access to an extensive number of graduate and graduate-affiliated faculty.
Each student typically receives a generous scholarship that encourages focus with minimal distraction.
Each student receives a private studio and access to all college labs and facilities.
Each student receives a stipend and gains work experience as a teaching assistant.
Cornell offers the possibility of intensive focus in a pastoral setting, with global integration through multiple university/college/program/museum lecture series, symposia, and colloquia.
The Herbert F. Johnson Museum collaborates with the department and the college to bring a remarkably diverse group of visiting artists, curators, and writers to campus each semester.
We support extensive possibilities for exhibition, including an annual group exhibition in New York City with panel discussions, invited curators, and a comprehensive exhibition catalog.
The MFA at Cornell provides an outstanding opportunity for artists to embrace a stimulating art practice, committed to the complex and often demanding pleasures of research, labor, and experimentation.
