The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce its programs and events in Hong Kong during ART HK 11. The university’s exhibitions department presents “NO LAB on Tour” by noted contemporary artists Cao Fei + MAP Office at SCAD Gallery, opening 27 May during Art HK, and on view through 12 August. For the exhibition, artist and Guangzhou-native Cao Fei has joined with the Hong Kong-based MAP Office, the interdisciplinary design and research team comprised of Laurent Gutierrez and Valérie Portefaix, to create a site-specific installation and experience via film and the online virtual community Second Life that recalls the massive natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina.
The project made its worldwide debut in November 2008 as part of the Prospect.1 New Orleans biennial, and was redesigned in new iterations titled “NO LAB on Tour” for SCAD’s locations in Lacoste, France, and Savannah and Atlanta, Ga. The exhibition design has been reconceived for the Hong Kong venue and features new elements that showcase the evolution of the project at each successive SCAD location. The Hong Kong presentation is curated by SCAD’s Executive Director of Exhibitions Laurie Ann Farrell in collaboration with MAP Office.
SCAD also presents a specially commissioned installation at ART HK by SCAD MFA candidate Jason Hackenwerth titled “And Then There Were None.” The installation, which is on view in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, presents the artist’s signature complex, fanciful sculptural balloon constructions. Hackenwerth manipulates and orchestrates 10,000 latex balloons – in shades of brown, blush and clear—into two massive cantilevered forms suspended within the Convention Centre. The work is a dramatic allusion to the diverse and delicate nature of our world and the urgency to protect and preserve its balance.
Also at ART HK, SCAD’s Executive Director of Exhibitions Laurie Ann Farrell will participate as a panelist in Christie’s Hong Kong panel talk: “Cosmopolitan Curating: Contexts, Customs, Commerce.” The talk takes place at the Convention Centre on Saturday, 28 May, at 15:00, and will be moderated by Sarah Thornton, contributing writer for The Economist and author of the bestselling book, “Seven Days in the Art World.”
