The National Institute for Experimental Arts at the University of New South Wales invites applications to PhD and graduate research programs from art/design/media practitioners and theorists.
NIEA encourages interdisciplinary innovation in all areas of practice and theory, aligned with its major research themes of:
Media and Innovation
Environment and Sustainability
Social Practice
PhDs make an original contribution to knowledge via practice and/or written thesis. NIEA PhDs may enroll through any of COFA’s four schools—Art, Art History and Art Education, Design Studies and Media Arts or may affiliate to the Research Centres within NIEA:
The Centre for Interactive Cinema (iCinema), which supports interdisciplinary artistic/scientific research into digital media, environmental arts, interactive aesthetics and immersive visualization, intelligent systems.
The Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics (CCAP), which supports research into politics, social practice, visual anthropology and ethnography.
NIEA’s research labs include the Creative Robotics Lab and Porosity Studio.
