The two-year Master of Fine Arts program at Penn is focused on the professional development of studio artists. Through studio work, seminar courses, international residency opportunities and interactions with vital working artists, the program provides an open intellectual framework designed to foster critical awareness and independent artistic research. The Penn program encourages exploration and offers developing artists the opportunity to refine their methods through engagement with a wide range of artistic media, critical perspectives, and other disciplines. Students discover important concepts for innovative approaches to their work through courses in Architecture or Landscape Architecture within the School of Design, or in the wide range of courses offered throughout the university.
In the MFA program at Penn, all of the graduate students develop ongoing conversations with each of the faculty. Candidates have one-on-one studio conversations with an international program of visiting artists, curators, and writers. Senior Critics impact the character, diversity and continuity of the program by visiting periodically within the semester to offer workshops, studio visits, and lectures.
