On October 22nd at Cooper Union in New York, Art&Education announced Natilee Harren and Yates McKee as the winners of its inaugural Papers Prize, with their papers Objects Without Objects: The Artwork in Flux and Specters of Art. Both papers will be published on Art&Education Papers, and the two authors will share the total award of 2,000 USD.

The Art&Education 2011 Papers Prize received more than 200 entries from around the world. Nate Harrison was the runner-up for this year’s prize, with his text The Pictures Generation, the Copyright Act of 1976, and the Reassertion of Authorship in Postmodernity. Eric Golo Stone (US), Brianne Cohen (US), Noah Brehmer and Sydney Hart (UK), and Michael Goldberg (Australia) received honorable mention for their submissions.

At Cooper Union, the three finalists—Natilee Harren, Nate Harrison, and Yates McKee—gave fascinating presentations followed by conversation with the members of the 2011 jury: Daniel Birnbaum, Director, Moderna Museet; Claire Bishop, Associate Professor of Art History, The Graduate Center, CUNY; Tim Griffin, Director and Chief Curator, The Kitchen; Suzanne Hudson, Co-founder and President of the Society of Contemporary Art Historians;  Molly Nesbit, Professor Art History, Vassar College; Brian Kuan Wood, Editor, e-flux journal.

Established in 2011, Art&Education Papers Prize is a biannual prize awarded to emerging scholars from around the world conducting research in contemporary art history. The prize considers research-based submissions in English that may be drawn from conference papers, seminar papers, dissertation chapters, etc. Submissions have the opportunity for publication on Art&Education Papers—a free contributor-driven platform seeking to make research performed by art historians, theorists, curators, and artists more available to the public.
