Scholars discuss concepts of realism in contemporary art, providing a context for verisimilitude as a central aesthetic and conceptual strategy in Maurizio Cattelan’s work and its role in his critical practice. Participants include Dorothea von Hantelmann (Assistant Professor, Freie Universität, Berlin), Valerie Hillings (Associate Curator, Abu Dhabi Project, Guggenheim Museum), Alexander Potts (Max Loehr Collegiate Professor, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor); and moderator, Nancy Spector (Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Guggenheim Museum). Within this after-hours setting, Tracey Bashkoff (Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Guggenheim Museum) and Bibiana Obler (Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, George Washington University), noted scholar on Vasily Kandinsky and Gabrielle Münter, guide a walkthrough of the exhibition Kandinsky’s Painting with White Border, highlighting Kandinsky’s artistic process, his creative life with artist Gabrielle Münter, and his progression toward abstraction. Untitled, 2010
A non-linear montage of archival and pop footage that recalls the passionate activism sparked by the early years of the AIDS crisis. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum joins over fifty major museums, arts organizations, community groups and colleges throughout the United States presenting simultaneous, free public screenings of Untitled in recognition of World AIDS Day. The film is distributed for 2011 World AIDS Day/Day With(out) Art by Visual AIDS.
