The MFA Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts is now accepting applications for the Summer 2011 semester. The immersive 66-credit degree program is composed of a rigorous curriculum with coursework structured to be delivered via a feature-rich, interactive online learning environment throughout the course of two academic calendar years, in addition to a series of three intensive summer sessions to be held at the College’s campus in New York City. During the summer, students will further their body of work during dedicated studio time, while attending classes, seminars and critiques and engaging with the diverse cultural offerings and resources that the city of New York and the vibrant SVA community provide.
THE PROGRAM
The Art Practice program offers a low-residency, cross-disciplinary approach to an MFA degree. In this post-conceptual, post-studio era, artists pursue their practice by engaging an idea first, and then developing a plan that may involve a combination of media, technologies and techniques, some of which are linked to traditional art media, and some of which find the artist working with technologies and industries not usually associated with artmaking.
We want to help prepare artists to feel secure in their ability to find ways to produce works of art using traditional and nontraditional media in both traditional and nontraditional settings. To accomplish this, we bring together a carefully selected, small group of MFA candidates who will devote three successive summers and the two intervening years to a program in which they will engage with artists, designers, art historians and museum curators. Core faculty members include: David Ross, Suzanne Anker, Dara Birnbaum, Kathy Brew, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz, Laura F. Gibellini, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Susan Hefuna, Daniel Kunitz, Steven Henry Madoff, Ernesto Pujol, Sarah Sharp, Gary Simmons, Jovana Stokic, Mickalene Thomas, Mark Tribe, Robin Winters, and Linda Yablonsky. Visiting artists and guest lecturers include: Vito Acconci, Cory Arcangel, Roger Black, Maurice Berger, Mel Chin, Liz Diller, Liam Gillick, James Gleick, Dan Graham, Terence Koh, Mingwei Lee, James Harithas, Glenn Ligon, Douglas Nickel, Maria Nordman, Izhar Patkin, Martha Rosler, Tim Rollins, Philippe Vergne, Cecilia Vicuña, and Carrie Mae Weems.
