The University and the City
Boise State University is the largest university in Idaho with approximately 20,000 students enrolled. Boise State offers 168 areas of academic study, including doctoral degrees, master’s degrees, certificates and more than 100 undergraduate degrees. Situated at the junction of a high desert landscape and the western foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the city of Boise and Boise State University are located near many miles of hiking and bicycling trails, skiing resorts including Bogus Basin, Brundage, and Sun Valley, and whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Payette and Salmon rivers. The city and surrounding area are connected through an extensive greenbelt that follows the Boise River along the northern perimeter of the Boise State campus.
MFA Program
The MFA, Visual Arts degree program at Boise State University offers an intimate and immersive studio experience centered on students’ creative, intellectual, and professional development as artists in the contemporary world. The program focuses on individual students who flourish by working with 23 dynamic graduate faculty members (artists, designers, art historians, and art educators) on a rotating basis. In addition to full-time faculty, students interact closely with other professional artists and scholars through the department’s Visiting Artist and Scholar Program. Faculty coordinated graduate student travel opportunities are provided each academic year with destinations including cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City. Coursework emphasizes applied study, art history, theory and criticism.
The MFA degree at Boise State requires extensive research and writing as a fundamental aspect of artistic practice. Applicants must document a desire and ability to engage in the highest level of discourse in all components of the program. The program culminates in an exhibition of a body of work, a written thesis that supports the work, and an oral defense of both.
MFA Facilities
Individual private studios with Apple computers and Internet access are provided on campus for all MFA students. Studios are located adjacent to dedicated facilities where students can experiment and create, as well as communicate with their peers and faculty. Facilities include a tool shop, a large exhibition and presentation area, and easy access to printmaking, ceramic, art metals, sculpture and digital technology labs.
MA Program
The program leading to the Master of Arts in Art Education degree is designed to meet the needs of art educators working in schools, museums and other arts organizations or communities, and gives students the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become reflective and well-informed art educators. It does not lead to initial certification nor does it require certification for admission. Course work focuses on advanced curriculum development, an examination of contemporary issues relating to art and education, and advanced study of art history and studio practices. Students may select from either a thesis or project culminating experience.
Graduate Assistantships
Graduate assistantships are awarded competitively. Assistantships include a nonresident tuition waiver, a resident fee waiver, and a stipend.
Students
Students come from various states across the country and from cities around the world. A strong sense of community and sharing is facilitated by the small number of students in residence together with a large group of caring and dedicated graduate faculty. Graduates of our programs are currently pursuing careers in studio art, public, college and university teaching, museum work and other art-related fields.
Graduate Faculty
The graduate faculty consists of artists, art historians, and art educators interested in furthering the objectives of the program and contributing to every student’s learning experience. They are committed to the highest standards of excellence in their fields and to the realization of the potential of their students. They are diverse in their ideas, their research, and their art, and are engaged in the dialogue of contemporary art.
