MFA and MA Application Deadline: January 15 (domestic), December 1 (international) for the following fall semester.

In 2010, the Department of Art and Art History moved to its new 180,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility, the Visual Arts Complex located at the heart of the University of Colorado campus near downtown Boulder. The department is a vibrant community of students, artists, and art historians and the 27 full-time faculty from 2 programs and 6 areas including Art History, Ceramics, Interdisciplinary Media Arts Program (IMAP–photography, digital media, video, integrated arts), Painting and Drawing, Printmaking, and Sculpture and Post-Studio Practice. The Art and Art History MFA Filmmaking art track, offered in collaboration with the Film Studies Program, provides students with additional interdisciplinary opportunities. Faculty and visiting artists and scholars work with approximately 50 graduate students each year in small seminars, independent studies, and studio critiques, challenging students to develop critically-aware practices and preparing them for professional lives in the arts. Funding is available to graduate students through teaching opportunities, departmental assistantships, and fellowships.

Graduate students may pursue an MFA in Studio Arts, a Filmmaking track MFA, or an MA in Art History. The MFA is a two and half year program and the MA is a two-year program. The Visiting Artist and Visiting Scholars Programs complement the department’s course offerings by bringing several renowned national and international artists and scholars to campus to speak and meet with students each semester. The Film Studies First Person visiting filmmakers and media artist program hosts leading artists each semester.
