Afterall is pleased to announce the Amsterdam and London launches of Making Art Global (Part I): The Third Havana Biennial 1989.

In this book, the second in Afterall’s Exhibition Histories series, Rachel Weiss examines the ways in which the third edition of the Bienal de La Habana extended the global territory of contemporary art and redefined the biennial model.  Gerardo Mosquera, a key member of the curatorial team, contributes a reflection on the project, and original papers delivered by Geeta Kapur and Mirko Lauer during the biennial, as well as contemporaneous reviews by Coco Fusco and Luis Camnitzer are republished.  The book gathers over 100 colour images, an introduction by Charles Esche and recent interviews with participating artists Alex Ángeles, José Bedia, Alfredo Márquez and Lázaro Saavedra.

For the Amsterdam launch, in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Rachel Weiss and Gerardo Mosquera will deliver key-note presentations before being joined by Direlia Lazo (freelance curator), and Annie Fletcher (curator of exhibitions, Van Abbemuseum) for a moderated debate.

The London launch, a collaboration between Afterall, BA Fine Art, MRes Art: Exhibition Studies and Central Saint Martins research, will follow a lecture by Rachel Weiss, and take place at Central Saint Martins’s new building at King’s Cross.
