The Department of Art and Art History brings together talented students and a faculty of highly regarded professional artists and art historians. The department has about 20 graduate students and 19 full-time faculty. Graduate students may pursue an MFA in Ceramics, Painting, Photography/Digital Imaging, Printmaking, and Sculpture in a program that is designed for personal development and career success. The department has newly renovated studios and operates gallery spaces at the College of Arts and Sciences Gallery and in Miami’s renowned Wynwood Art District, and has additional exhibition opportunities at the University’s Lowe Art Museum.
The mission of the Motion Picture Program is to nurture individual creative voices and independent thinking through the creative collaborative motion picture process for careers in both screen arts and the moving image profession. The MFA program in Motion Pictures emphasizes critical understanding of moving image practice in diverse social and cultural contexts for the creation of work that is relevant and impactful. Graduate students in Motion Pictures may pursue flexible specialization in Producing, Directing, Screenwriting, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, Non-Fiction, and Interactive media creation.
The University of Miami offers distinctive opportunities for field experience abroad, interdisciplinary collaboration, professional networking opportunities and national exposure. The MFA educational offerings are complemented by renowned national and international artists and scholars visits to campus each semester. The Cosford Cinema hosts visiting filmmakers, curated film series, panels and film festivals.
Funding is available to graduate students through teaching opportunities, departmental assistantships, and fellowships.
