The Summer Studio Program at Virginia Commonwealth University (SSP @ VCU) has an established track record of inspiring and developing artists within a supportive, hothouse environment. Based on our successful MFA program, the 8-week intensive combines studio practice, critique, and theory. The program cultivates professional attitudes and know-how with an emphasis on individual investigation. For nearly a decade we have attracted students from across the country and transformed their work. Participants come together for uninterrupted time to work in generous studios, and engage in ongoing dialogue with top artists and critics. The commitment to your advancement by those leading the program is remarkable, and is what sets this opportunity apart. This two-month residency program is appropriate for young artists developing a portfolio for application to graduate school, as well as those interested in uninterrupted immersion making work and getting feedback for it, in a stimulating and supportive atmosphere.
VCU SSP alumni:
“In two months, my work improved as much as in three years of university study.”
“I left the program feeling good, with stronger convictions, tougher questions, and more specific goals.”
“Your serious belief in our individual potential and unwavering investment in our art practice was so encouraging, and certainly served as the impetus I needed to begin to transform how, why and to what end I make art.”
“This is truly a transformative process.”
THE PROGRAM
Each week includes group critiques, individual studio visits and a seminar—the focal point for discussion of contemporary ideas and critical theory. We also provide practical support in writing about your work, and in photographic documentation for professional applications. The program’s emphasis is on the evolution of your studio practice, culminating in exit reviews and an exhibition of the work produced.
